Author's Notes:
BEHIND THE CURTAIN: A Q&A with Thomas Hischak

What sparked the idea for this play?
Being an avid fan of Little Women, I’ve read all of Louisa May Alcott’s books and was very intrigued by her novel Work. It is an early book about a heroine who is totally independent of men.

If you had to describe this play in three words, what would they be?
Engrossing, surprising, moving.

Which character was the most fun to write and why?
The main character Christie was far ahead of her time. I most enjoyed writing her for the stage.

What do actors seem to enjoy most about performing this show?
The wide variety of characters.

What’s something directors should know before staging this play?
This play gets very serious at times and some difficult issues arise on occasion.

What was the biggest challenge in writing this play?
Telling a story that takes place over a period of 20 years. Keeping the narration direct and yet descriptive.

What do you hope audiences walk away feeling?
Surprised that this novel was so interesting and moving.

Just for fun: If this play came with a warning label, what would it say?
Be prepared to discover a new world from the author of Little Women.

Anything else you’d like to share with theatres considering this play?
This is a challenging pay to produce but worth it.

Synopsis
From the world of “Little Women” comes another poignant story that will move your audience with laughter and tears. During the middle of the 19th century, the strong-willed, orphaned teenager Christie sets out to be her own person, not dependent on any relatives or a husband to support her, but to earn her own living and maintain her own self-respect. Over a period of twenty years she encounters times of happiness and hardship, meets rich and poor people who influence her life, gets involved with tragic and joyous events, and eventually finds herself as a woman. Based on Louisa May Alcott's farsighted novel “Work,” this play will take both actors and audience on a journey that is filled with reaffirming life.
